About Us

Back in the 1970's, before solar panels were as widely available as they are today, many people living off-grid relied on alternative sources for light such as candles. It was at that time that my grandmother, Pauline, began making candles and selling them locally so that people could light their homes in the mountains of rural Northern California.

In 1994, Candles by Polly O became known as Bell Springs Candleworks when my folks, Matt and Cheryl, took over the business. With the help of my Aunt Laura, my parents grew the Candleworks until their candles were available across Northern California. Looking back now, I realize that I grew up in the candleshop, helping out along with my siblings and cousins in what was truly a family business.

If you'd asked me as a teenager whether I would ever take over the candle business (and many people did ask), I would have said "never ever," but that just goes to remind us to "never say never," as I couldn't be more happy or proud to say that in 2015 my husband Frank and I have taken on the mantle of the candlemaker and are looking forward to taking Bell Springs Candleworks into the future.

With Gratitude,

Lindsay Hansen
